Mention the Jungles of Borneo & instantly you are drawn to the amazing Orangutans with their uncanny humanoid behaviour. Borneo has become one of the fastest growing destinations in South East Asia. Its jungle is overflowing with spectacular wildlife & the botanical flora & fauna is like no other. It is a place of immense diversity. From the lively city of Kota Kinabalu with its wonderful shopping, the calm of mysterious Mt Kinabalu, its wondrous wildlife of the jungle - ranging from the pigmy elephant to the colourful hornbills, to the crystal clear waters of the Turtle Islands off the coast of Sandakan.
Location
The Island of Borneo is located in Southeast Asia & with a land area of 743,330 sq km, is the world's third largest island. It is divided up between three countries. Indonesia owns the largest area, Sarawak & Sabah are owned by Malaysia, and a small portion is owned by the tiny Oil rich State of Brunei. At present we Travel through Sabah & Brunei & will be travelling through Sarawak shortly.
Orang-utan
A huge attraction of the rainforest is the much-loved Orang-utan. It’s uncanny how humanoid its behaviour mirrors ours. After encountering this amazing ape, instantly the meaning behind the name is clear. In Malay the phrase orang utan means "man of the forest."
Brunei
Since gaining independence from the British in 1984, Brunei is now ruled by the much-loved Sultan of Brunei. Although the majority of the population is Muslim, Brunei has adopted the national philosophy of the Malay Islamic Monarchy. It has become a popular stopover & each year welcomes over a million travellers from all corners of the world. Alcohol is illegal, but, if a license is purchased, a foreigner is able to bring in one bottle upon entry. Brunei is proud of its Kampung Ayer - the entire village is built on stilts rising from the SungaiBrunei and it's a reminder how the people of Brunei used to live. As you fly over Brunei again you'll be welcomed by lush Tropical jungle, a place that also houses extraordinary wildlife including the Proboscis monkey.
